WorleyParsons is a leading provider of professional services to the resources and energy sectors, as well as complex process industries, with approximately 40,000 people, in 165 offices in 43 countries. Its chief information officer, Brian Adams, discusses how the changing business environment is forcing CIOs to do the same. Gone are the days of being asked to manage technical expertise and “how” IT does things.
Today’s CIO needs to be able to discuss “what” they are doing to strategically support the business. If a CIO is capable of taking a broader view of the enterprise, they are more likely to be successful in enabling, supporting and driving business outcomes.
Adams says, “Today’s CIO needs to be able to translate technical speak to how the organization can support the business.” If CIOs can take a broader perspective and change the language being used, it will ultimately allow them to become part of the CEO’s growth team.
